    灯塔社区中心的陪读班学生阿叶(化名),每每看到让他满脑子问号的作业,都会化身询问大王,呼叫低年级的负责老师,是为了要老师到身边帮助他。以上的情况,是陪读班每一天就会上演的情景。”阿叶,你自己先看一看题目哦!“若恰好老师正在指导另外一位的孩子,没办法立时去到阿叶的身边,老师会请阿叶自行先尝试看看题目,然后回答问题。但少了老师陪伴的阿叶,就兴致缺缺。他时而坐在椅子上原地发呆,时而转动手上的铅笔、在书本上作画,直等到老师陪在他身边手把手教导,才愿意完成功课。老师看着他被动的学习方式,不免忧心忡忡。

​其实,阿叶父母的关系很不好,他常常在家中目睹父母吵架的场景。这不和谐的家庭氛围导致他的情绪波动很大,一点小事都会让他大哭或大怒。曾经有一次,他在陪读班做功课时段因走动过多而干扰其他学生的学习,老师见状后就责备他,他委屈巴巴地流了眼泪,然后开始大哭不停。

放学后的阿叶一如既往地背着重重的背包,一步一步地踏上楼梯,进入陪读班。当他拿出功课张口要问老师的那一瞬间,脑中突然想起老师说的那些话:”阿叶,你自己先看一看题目哦“”你是可以自己做的”“试一试“。一边翻,一边看学校老师布置的作业,阿叶鼓起勇气尝试自己看题目,然后进行作答。“咦!这题….我会!””这题,文章中有跟题目一样的字,应该是这答案!“不尝试,怎么知道呢?一旦尝试去做,才惊讶发现:原来我那么厉害!慢慢的,阿叶对学习产生了兴趣,看到功课的他开启了自动模式,会自动自发开始做功课了。

 一年又一年,阿叶渐渐长大。现今他已是高班的学生了,面对的课业越来越令他“烧脑”。纵然他对功课还是感到一头雾水,但现在已经学会耐着性子把问题看过一遍,尽最大的努力自己先尝试作答后再问老师。他不再依赖老师,自行完成功课,学习能力进步神速。不止如此,阿叶也学习表达自己的情绪,不再动不动就大哭大闹了。偶尔,含蓄的他也会以拥抱,回应老师对他的爱。看着老师惊讶的表情,阿叶便淘气地笑了起来。

        Whenever Ah Ye (pseudonym), a companionship class student from Lighthouse Community Center A/G encounters problems with his homework, he immediately requests the teacher’s assistance, calling the teacher in charge of the lower primary class to come and help him. This situation happens every day in the class. “Ah Ye,  you read the question on your own first.” If the teacher is tutoring another child, and can’t attend to his request immediately, she will ask him to try it out first. However, without the teacher’s company, Ah Ye would not be interested. He would sit in his chair and stare, spin the pencil in his hand, draw in his book, and wait until the teacher came to him and taught him personally, only then he would be willing to complete his homework. Looking at his passive learning style, the teacher couldn’t help but feel worried.

Ah Ye’s parents were not on good terms, he always witnessed his parents quarrelling at home.  This disharmonious family atmosphere caused him to have big mood swings, and even the smallest thing would make him cry or get angry. There was once when he was doing homework in the companionship class, he disturbed other students’ studies by moving around too much. The teacher rebuked him for this behaviour, he immediately shed tears in grievance which later turned into crying non-stop loudly.

One day after school, Ah Ye carried his heavy school bag and walked up the stairs into companionship class as usual. The moment he took out his homework and naturally he wanted to call out to the teacher, he suddenly remembered what the teacher said: “Ah Ye, you can try to read the question first.”, “You can do it on your own”, “Give it a try”.  While flipping through and reading the homework assigned by the school teacher, Ah Ye took the courage to try to read the questions by himself and then answered them.  “Hey! I know the answer to this question.” “This question, the article has the same phrase as this question, I think that should be the answer!” How does one know if he or she doesn’t try? Once he tried, he was surprised to find out that: He was not bad after all! Slowly, Ah Ye became interested in learning. Now whenever he looked at his homework, he would turn on the automatic mode and start doing the homework without hesitation.

​Year after year, Ah Ye had grown into a big boy. Now he is in the upper class, and the subjects he faces are getting too much for his brain, and he still headache with his homework, yet he has now learned to read the questions patiently and try his best to answer them before asking the teacher. He no longer relies on teachers and can complete his homework on his own, consequently his learning ability has improved rapidly. Not only that, Ah Ye also learned to express his emotions and no longer cried and wailed easily. Occasionally, he would respond to the teacher’s love with a hug. Seeing the teacher’s surprised expression, Ah Ye laughed mischievously.
